Since my brother died 6 years ago having suffered from depression in the last year of his life, I’ve been searching for a way to honour his memory and raise awareness about one of the toughest illnesses in the book.
Around one in five Australians will suffer from a mood disorder in their lifetime. For some people it will be an isolated event but, for the majority, it will be an ongoing challenge throughout their life that will impact on their family, friends and work colleagues.
Matthew Johnstone, the Black Dog’s creative advisor is a sufferer himself and the author of “I Had a Black Dog” and “Living with the Black Dog”.
“The hardest thing when you are depressed is thinking that there is no way out. But with the right steps, those Black Dog days do pass. My Black Dog may reappear, but I’m equipped now to deal with him. I’ve brought him to heel.”
